The steel wool is graded in a numerical zero scale. The finest steel wool is grade 0000 and the coarsest steel wool is grade #4. The following is just the rough idea for grade selection. But keep in mind that the coarser grades are often used for remove paints and dust or other finishes while the finer grades are often used for polishing to give a glossy finish.You'd better ask an expert when not sure.
